Preserving Our Family Legacy
From Dublin to Huron to Allendale: The Sheridans' Long Road to Michigan
DRAFT — not yet published. Prepared 23 October 2026 for lowing.org. Facts, readings and image permissions to be re-checked before posting.
By Trevor Lowing
When John T. Sheridan died at Allendale, Michigan, on a Sunday in February 1938, the doctor filled in the usual blanks on his death certificate. Under "birthplace" he wrote one word: Canada. His parents were Thomas Sheridan and Susan Lambert, both born in Ireland. [4] For decades that was nearly all our family knew about where the Sheridans came from. One clue, one country, and no town.
This is the story of how the records filled in the rest, and of the gaps they still leave. Thomas and Susan Sheridan did not simply cross from Ireland to Michigan. Over about twenty-three years they lived in at least four countries. Their children were born in England, New York and Upper Canada before the family settled in Ottawa County. Their granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Sheridan, married into the Lowing family in 1913. That is how this line comes down to us.
A note on method: genealogy works best when we are honest about how sure we are. Throughout this article, Proven means an original record says it directly. Likely means good evidence points that way but no single record proves it. Unproven means it comes from a family tree or a guess and still needs a source. Numbers in square brackets point to the Sources list at the end.
1. Ireland: a wedding in Blanchardstown?
What we know. Susan Sheridan's 1905 Michigan death certificate says she was born in Ireland. It names her father as Joshua Lambert and her mother as Mary Cook, both also born in Ireland. [3] John's 1938 certificate and his 1887 marriage record both name his parents as Thomas Sheridan and Susan(na) Lambert. [4][14] The 1861 census of Canada West lists both Thomas and Susana as Irish-born. On that page the county looks to me like "Dublin Co." The handwriting is hard to read, though, and I cannot be certain of it. [1]
What is likely, but unproven. The Roman Catholic register of Blanchardstown (Castleknock) parish, just west of Dublin city, has a promising entry. Under Marriages, October 1843, entry 14 reads "Thomas Sheridan to Susan Lambert." The witnesses were Charles Lambert and Margaret Lambert. The place noted beside the entry may be Chapelizod, but that reading is uncertain. [2]
The names fit, the county fits, and the date fits a first child born about 1845–46. Even so, the entry gives no ages and no parents' names. Nothing in it ties this Thomas and Susan to the couple who later lived in Michigan. Thomas Sheridan was a common name in Co. Dublin. Some online family trees give the marriage date as 13 February 1843, but no source supports that date. The register image says October. [2][22]
A wrinkle. I read every Blanchardstown baptism page from February 1844 to early 1852. None records a child of Thomas Sheridan and Susan Lambert. [28] A "Thomas Sheridan" does appear as a godparent there in 1844 and again in December 1846, though both readings are uncertain. The couple's eldest son was born in England around 1845–46, so the godparent may have been another Thomas, or the family may have travelled back and forth across the Irish Sea. For now this remains a question rather than a contradiction.

2. Lancashire, Yorkshire and New York: the census as a road map
Thomas and Susan left no diary or letters that we know of. The best map of their journey is a single census page, the 1861 census of Canada West (now Ontario). Each child's birthplace is listed there in order. [1]
| Child (1861 age) | Born about | Birthplace given in 1861 |
|---|---|---|
| Thomas (15) | 1845–46 | Lancashire, England |
| Susana (12) | 1848–49 | York[shire], England |
| James (11) | 1849–50 | New York (county read as "Chemung?") |
| Mary E. (9) | 1851–52 | New York |
| Charles (6) | Feb 1855 | Huron, Canada West |
| Margret (4) | Apr 1857 | Huron, Canada West |
Read from top to bottom, the list follows the family's route. They went from Ireland to the industrial north of England in the mid-1840s, the years of the Great Famine, when Lancashire took in huge numbers of Irish migrants. Next they crossed the Atlantic to New York by about 1850. The 1850 U.S. census finds them in the town of Veteran, Chemung County, New York: Thos. "Sherdon," 30, and Susan, 27, both born in Ireland, with Thos., 4, and Susan, 2, both born in England. [41] That record confirms the England-to-New York leg of the journey. James, who was born in New York about 1849–50 according to the 1861 census, is not yet in the household. By early 1855 they were in Huron County, Upper Canada. I have no ship or arrival record. [1][29]
Later records from the siblings agree with the census. Thomas J. Sheridan's 1913 Michigan marriage gives his birth as 1846, England, and his parents as Thos. Sheridan and Susan Lambert. [21] James A. Sheridan's 1886 Wisconsin marriage also names Thomas Sheridan and Susanna Lambert as his parents. [21] Family trees place Mary E.'s birth at Millport, Chemung County, New York, about 1853. I have not yet seen a record that confirms it. [22]

3. Huron County: the 1861 breakthrough
For a long time we searched Huron County for "Thomas Sheridan" and found the wrong people. Three things were hiding our family.
The spelling. The 1861 census indexer typed the name as "Sherdan." [1] The family's own church records spell it even more strangely. Charles's baptism calls his father "Thomas Chereton." [5]
The wrong John. A Thomas Sheridan household in nearby Wawanosh Township also had a little boy named John in 1861. That family turned out to be different. The mother was Ann, not Susan. They belonged to the Church of England, and their John later moved to Midland, Michigan. I ruled them out. [23]
The indexer's "Vohlen." In the index, the parents' birthplace appears as "Vohlen." Nobody could find a place called Vohlen. On the original page the word looks much more like "Dublin Co., Ireland." My reading is cautious, but it fits the Blanchardstown marriage. [1]
The original census page puts Thomas (46), a yeoman, and Susana (40) in Morris Township, Huron County, with the six children listed above. The whole household was Roman Catholic. [1] That one word changed the search. It told us to look in Catholic registers for the children's baptisms, rather than in the Methodist and Anglican records we had been checking.

Baptisms at St. Peter's, Goderich
Morris Township had only a small log Catholic mission in the 1850s, St. Michael's on the 7th line. It was served by priests who rode in from other parishes and did not keep its own register until 1880. [27] The Sheridans' children were found instead in the register of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Goderich, the county town on Lake Huron. Both entries are signed by the parish priest, Father P. Schneider. [5][6]
- Charles, born in February 1855 (the exact day is hard to read) and baptized 8 February 1856. He is entered as the son of "Thomas Chereton and Susan Lambert." The godparents were John and Mary Moon. [5]
- Margaret, born 8 April 1857 and baptized 10 January 1858. She is entered as "Margaret Sherdan, daughter of Thomas Sherdan and Susanna Lambert." The godparents were Peter [Jetteson?] and Mary Ann Connors. [6]
The surname is badly spelled, but the mother's maiden name, Lambert, is not. The birth dates agree with the ages in the 1861 census. Proven: Thomas and Susanna (Lambert) Sheridan were Catholic residents of Huron County by early 1856. Margaret's entry is the earliest Canadian record I have found that names Susanna Lambert.

On the land in Morris Township
The County of Huron Gazetteer and Directory for 1863–64 lists two men named Thomas Sheridan in Morris Township. One was on Concession 6, Lot 29, and the other on Concession 8, Lot 3. [7] The second Thomas was born in Co. Cavan about 1816. He married first a Susan Ann Brown, who died in 1848, and then Sarah Morton. He stayed in Morris and died there in 1896. [24] Two Thomases in one small township is exactly the kind of trap family historians fall into. The answer came from the deeds themselves, because a wife had to sign away her dower right whenever her husband sold or mortgaged land, and the clerk copied her name into the register.
The Huron County registry kept full copies of every deed and mortgage, and the Morris Township copybook for 1856–68 is filmed. [30] It settles the question:
- Concession 6, Lot 29 belonged to the other Thomas. He bought the North Half from Charles B. McLean of Goderich in February 1862 and mortgaged it the same month. On that mortgage, and on his sale of part of the lot to Robert Gibson in April 1863, his wife is named as Sarah Sheridan. A later assignment shows that "Thomas Sheridan and Sarah, his wife" had also mortgaged land on Concession 5, Lot 28, in 1860. [31] My earlier guess that Lot 29 was ours was wrong.
- Concession 8, Lot 3 was ours. On 20 March 1866, "Thomas Sheridan of the Township of Morris, yeoman," mortgaged the North Half (100 acres) to Henry G. R. Becher of London for $700. The deed names "Susannah Sheridan wife of the said party of the first part," and both Thomas and Susannah signed it. On 21 November 1866 Thomas sold the lot to John Taylor of Morris for $1,800. Susannah again barred her dower and signed as "Susan Sheridan." The dower affidavit was sworn at Goderich that same day. [30]
So our Thomas and Susannah were still living in Morris Township, Canada West, in late November 1866. Within months they were in Michigan, which fits John's "1866" immigration year in later U.S. censuses. [12][13] By elimination, the Concession 8, Lot 3 entry in the 1863–64 gazetteer is also ours. [7] A clearer copy of the abstract book shows that the Crown patent, the government's formal grant of title, is dated 9 July 1866. [8] That came after the family had settled there, since the 1863–64 gazetteer already lists Thomas on the lot. [7] Settlers commonly bought Crown land on instalments and received the patent only once it was paid off, so the patent date is not the date they arrived. The original purchase file, which may say when Thomas first took up the lot, is at the Archives of Ontario and is not online.

4. John, the last Canadian-born child
John T. Sheridan, our ancestor, was born in 1862, after the census taker's visit in January 1861. The records disagree on the exact date:
- 12 June 1862. This is worked out from his age at death, 75 years, 8 months and 8 days, on his 1938 death certificate. His widow Nellie gave the information. [4]
- April 1861. This is from the 1900 U.S. census. [11] It cannot be right, because John is not in the January 1861 household. [1]
- 12 April 1862, at Blyth, Ontario. This comes from family trees, with no source given. [22] Blyth is a village on the edge of Morris Township, so the place is not unreasonable. No record yet supports it.
Every U.S. census from 1880 to 1930 says John was born in Canada. [10][11][12][13] With his parents in Morris Township in 1861, around 1863, and still in November 1866, the most likely birthplace is Morris Township, Huron County. That is a well-supported inference, not yet a proven fact. We have not found John's baptism. I have read the St. Peter's Goderich register and its duplicate page by page from 1861 to about 1865, and he is not there. [29] His baptism may be in the register of another priest who served the Morris mission. Finding it is the most important open job in this story.
We also cannot be certain what the "T." stood for. Family tradition says John Thomas, which would honour his father. Every record I have seen says simply "John T." [4][22]
5. Michigan: Allendale, Ottawa County
According to John's 1910 and 1930 census entries, he came to the United States in 1866, at about age four. [12][13] The 1900 census gives the year only as "186?". [11] In 1876 a county landowner list shows a Sheridan owning land in Section 24 of Allendale Township, though without a first name. [19] By 1880 the census shows Thomas (60) and Susan (55) farming in Allendale. Mary E. (26, born New York), Charles (24, born Canada) and John (18, born Canada) were still at home. [10] The 1884 Michigan state census finds Thos. (66), Susan (60) and John (22) still together in Allendale. That enumerator wrote "Ireland" as the birthplace for the whole household, John included, which is almost certainly a slip, since every other record says Canada. [39] In the 1892–93 county directory, John was farming Section 24 of Allendale on his own. [38] The censuses mark John as naturalized ("Na"). His papers have not been found, and as a child of about four he may have become a citizen through his father. [11][12][13]
Over time the older children married and scattered. Mary E. married Walter F. Tate. When she died in Grand Rapids in 1920, her death certificate gave her birth as 20 May 1853 in New York and her parents as Thomas Sheridan and Susan Lambert. [34] James married in Wisconsin in 1886, and Thomas J. was in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when he married in 1913. [21] Susana Sheridan married William Rose in Ottawa County. [20] The "Aggie Sheridan" who married Charles E. Bosworth turns out to be Margaret. The marriage register shows "Maggie Sheridan," 26, born Canada, of Allendale, marrying Charles E. Bosworth, 32, a carpenter of Georgetown, at Allendale on 11 June 1884. Her brother John was a witness, and the Congregational pastor Clarence Forster officiated. [40] The 1884 state census, taken that same month, marks her as married within the census year. [39] Her 1936 death certificate calls her the widow of Charles Bosworth, born 8 April 1858 in Canada, daughter of Thomas Sheridan and Susan Lamberts. [32] The day and month match her Goderich baptism, which gives the year as 1857. [6] Her son Lee's 1929 death certificate also names his mother as Margaret Sheridan, born in Canada. [36] Her obituary in the Zeeland Record lists among her survivors her son Carl, two daughters (Mrs. Wm. Berger and Mrs. Clyde Cory) and "her brother John Sheridan of Allendale." She was buried in Georgetown cemetery. [43] Charles never married and never moved far. In 1910 he was a millwright in John's household. [12] He died at Allendale on 28 February 1927. His death certificate gives his birth as 1 February 1855 in Canada, names Thomas Sheridan and Susannah Lambert as his parents, and was signed by John as informant. He was buried at Lamont. [33] So two of John's siblings have both a Canadian baptism and a death certificate saying "born Canada."
Susan (Lambert) Sheridan died at Allendale on 17 November 1905, aged about 82. She had been widowed, and the informant appears to have been her son Charles. [3] The certificate gives us the names of her parents, Joshua Lambert and Mary Cook. They are the only generation before Thomas and Susan that we can name.
Thomas Sheridan died in Allendale Township on 26 October 1891, aged 74 years, 10 months and 10 days. The Ottawa County death register describes him as a married farmer born in Ireland and gives the cause as paralysis. His parents are entered as "not known." [37] His stated age implies a birth around December 1816, older than most of his census ages suggest. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, where a gravestone for Thomas J. Sheridan (1816–1891) has been photographed. [42] His son Charles was buried at Lamont in 1927. [33] Find a Grave memorials place Charles, and Susan too, in Maplewood. [42][44] The Find a Grave pages also give birthplaces that no record I have seen supports: "Drumcree, Westmeath" for Thomas, with a father named James (1786–1831), and "Chapelizod, Dublin" for Susan. These are unverified claims by contributors, kept here only as leads. Chapelizod is interesting, though, because it may be the place noted beside the 1843 marriage entry. [2][42][44] By 1892–93 John was farming the Allendale land alone. [38] Susan died a widow in 1905. [3] I have found no obituary for Thomas (1891), Susan (1905) or Charles (1927) in the digitized newspapers. [29]

John and Nellie
On 12 December 1887, in Georgetown Township, John T. Sheridan (25, born Canada) married Nellie E. Bosworth. The record names his parents as Thomas Sheridan and Susanna Lambert. According to the marriage index, her parents were Frank Bosworth and Mary Lowing. [14] So the Sheridans and the Lowings were already connected a generation before the marriage that brought this line into our family. I have not yet traced how Nellie's mother was related to the Lowings of Georgetown.
Their daughter Mary Elizabeth Sheridan was born at Allendale on 6 October 1888. The county birth register names her father as John T. Sheridan, born in Canada, and her mother as Nellie E. Sheridan, born in Michigan. [15] John and Nellie went on to raise a large family. A newspaper of 1894 reports that "a pair of twins have taken up their abode" at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Sheridan. This is probably them. [17]
John lived the rest of his life in Allendale as a farmer. He died there on 20 February 1938 and was buried in the Allendale Township Cemetery. [4][18] The Allendale column of the Zeeland Record reported his funeral. The notice lists "the widow, four sons, Charles of Minnesota, Terrance of Conklin, Frank and John of Allendale, and four daughters, Mrs. R. Lowing of Jenison, Mrs. Newton Parish and Mrs. Erwin Parish of Coopersville and Mrs. Wayne Schoemaker of Schoolcraft," along with thirty-nine grandchildren. [17]
The obituary also settles a small puzzle. A 1942 cemetery transcription gives Nellie's death year as 1900. [18] Nellie's own death certificate settles it. She died at Allendale on 1 May 1946, and the certificate names her parents as Frank Bosworth and Mary Lowing, both born in New York. [35]

6. The Lowing connection
On 29 October 1913, Mary Elizabeth Sheridan, entered as "Marie" in the register and aged 25, married Roy H. Lowing, 26, of Georgetown. Roy was the son of Otis W. Lowing and Edna Gillette. Mary's parents are given as John Sheridan and Nellie Bosworth. [16] Some family trees give the date as 13 October, but the register says the 29th. Mary Elizabeth Sheridan Lowing died in 1971 and is buried in Georgetown Township Cemetery, Hudsonville. [25]
Mary and Roy's son Hugh C. Lowing was born in 1918 and died in 2010. [25][26] Hugh's son Thomas Hugh Lowing was my father. That makes Thomas and Susan Sheridan my great-great-great-grandparents. It also makes the unknown baptism of John T. Sheridan, somewhere in Huron County in 1862, a missing page in all of our stories.

Open questions: can you help?
If you are a Sheridan, Bosworth, Lowing, Rose, Tate or Parish descendant, you may hold the piece we are missing. Old letters, prayer cards, family Bibles, photographs, or even a remembered story would all help. Please get in touch through lowing.org.
- John T. Sheridan's baptism (1862). Does anyone have a baptismal certificate, a family Bible entry, or a remembered place of birth? Did the family ever say "Blyth," "Morris" or "Brussels"?
- What did the "T." stand for? Is there any document that spells out "John Thomas"?
- Obituaries, and the Irish birthplaces. Does anyone have an obituary for Thomas (October 1891) or Susan (November 1905)? Is there any family source for the Find a Grave claims of "Drumcree, Westmeath" (Thomas) and "Chapelizod, Dublin" (Susan)?
- The Irish link. Did anyone ever hear the family mention Dublin, Blanchardstown, Chapelizod or Castleknock, or Lambert relatives named Charles or Margaret?
- England and New York. Were there family stories about Lancashire (Liverpool? Manchester?), Yorkshire, or the town of Veteran in Chemung County, New York (Elmira, Millport)?
- Photographs. Does anyone have a picture of Thomas, Susan, John or Nellie Sheridan, or of the Allendale farm?
- Sheridan–Lowing–Bosworth ties. How was Nellie Bosworth's mother, Mary Lowing, related to Roy H. Lowing's family?
- Margaret ("Aggie") Sheridan Bosworth (1857–1936) of Grandville. Do her Bosworth descendants (Carl, Lee) have family papers that mention Canada or Morris Township?
Research notes for readers
- Ontario did not begin civil birth registration until 1869, so for a birth in 1862 church records are the main source.
- The surname appears as Sheridan, Sherdan, Sherriden, Sherridan, Chereton and Cheriton. Always search for variants.
- Two Thomas Sheridan families lived in Morris Township in the 1860s, and a third Thomas Sheridan family lived in Wawanosh. Check the wife's name, religion and children before attaching any record. In Morris, ours had wife Susannah (Con. 8, Lot 3); the other had wife Sarah (Con. 6, Lot 29, and Con. 5, Lot 28).
